1..3 School-Wide Environmental Behavior Changes
In the past 4 years, Severn School has undergone many significant changes as it has moved in the direction of being a more "green" school. In the summer of 2012, we embarked on a project at the Teel Campus to restore 3.5 acres between the school and the Severn River to a more natural habitat; removing invasive species; installing several outdoor education spaces, rain gardens, and bio-swales to regulate runoff. This area is called Stine Environmental Center. This space is used for all grade levels 6--12. Additionally, some of the Lower School grades have additionally taken field trips to this campus to use the space as well.
In the 2013-14 school year we implemented a one-to-one iPad program in the Middle and Upper Schools. The Lower School has 60 community iPads for use at school. Additionally, each faculty member on both campuses has a school iPad for use. This has helped reduce the amount of paper consumed within the school.
There have been many initiatives put into place to promote a paperless community. Our weekly school newsletter, "The Binnacle," is solely distributed via email link to all constituents. School performances are announced on the Binnacle. From there, performances are linked to ticket sales that are done exclusively online through Brown Paper Tickets. In addition to being paperless, as people buy their tickets, they are able to decide whether they would like a portion of the proceeds to go to "Animals & Environment," "Children & Human Rights" or "Microfinance & Micro-loans." Grades at the Middle and High School level can be accessed throughout the semester through NetClassroom. Middle and High School report cards are also posted here rather than printed. Parent Teacher Sign ups are also done online through a portal called Parent Teacher Conference Wizard. Likewise, summer programs do not have a brochure, only an online catalog and sign up. School events that need an RSVP are done in an Evite-style format Admissions Applications are also solely done online.
Our most recent building project on the Teel Campus (completed in the summer of 2015) included environmental innovations such as the installation of motion-activated lights, automatic faucets and toilets, hydration stations for water bottles, and a small green roof. We have also made a change in the recycling bins and trash receptacles on both campuses to provide a common visual for all students as to where to appropriately place disposable items.
