Part II: Summary of Activities
Given Severn School's proximity to the Severn River and the Chesapeake Bay, Severn has developed a major commitment to environmental stewardship. Additionally, with our role as educators, we value our Mission Statement and the importance of nurturing our students to become concerned citizens of our community and stewards for our planet. As quoted on our Severn School "Headmaster's Welcome" Page: "The principles of our mission – character, conduct, scholarship, leadership, service and achievement – are certainly alive and readily evident in the life of our school." Encouraging our students to become environmental stewards is one way to help our students achieve all of these principles.
As mentioned in Section 1.3, we have made several strides over the last several years to improve our campus and our program. New features and green measures were purposely implemented with the Teel building project of 2014-2015. Some of our highlights include:
Further investigation of our application will show that we have a environmental elements threaded throughout the PS--12th grade curriculum. Likewise, environmental activism is promoted, and students are encouraged to take part in activities that lead to activism both in class and extracurriculars. Faculty that has been here for several years have commented about how the environment has become more integrated in all aspects of the school's culture. The environment has become something that we are versus something that we do.

- Installation of water and energy conservation tools such as motion activated lights, timed faucets, and hydration stations;
- Improvements to our natural structures such as removal of invasive plants;
- Improvements on the nature trails/outdoor education spaces on both campuses;
- Installation of a rain gardens/bio-swales, and green roof to assist with runoff;
- Movement to a more paperless program with our one-to-one iPad initiative in Middle and Upper School;
- Development of a stronger commitment to recycling and restructuring the recycling and trash receptacles on both campuses.
