Partners in the Local Community
Building community relationships with our greater community outside of campus is of great importance to us at Severn School.
Celine Cousteau Visit
As part of an annual lecture series, the school hosted Celine Cousteau for a free presentation to the greater Severna Park/Arnold community on April 14, 2015. Granddaughter of oceanographer Jacques Yves Cousteau and daughter to filmmaker/ocean explorer Jean-Michel Cousteau, Celine is an explorer and communicator herself. She shared stories from the field and her concerns for the environment.

Here are some of our current and annual service projects that are important to us at Severn.
- Call For Coats" Coat Drives (Both campuses/all 3 divisions--annually)
- Kids Who Care Holiday Share Program (Lower School--annually)
- Backpack Buddies 8th grade Environmental Elective packed lunches through "Backpack Buddies" (winter 2015-16).
Partners at the School
Oyster Recovery Partnership
In 2014, Severn School teamed up with the Oyster Recovery Partnership (ORP), Maryland's leading nonprofit in oyster recovery. It's a natural fit considering our location on the Severn River and our commitment to teach students about being responsible stewards of the environment. ORP is an organization that has actively participated in educating the student, who have in turn worked with ORP to become involved in oyster recovery efforts in the community. Below is a description of ways the school has partnered with ORP in the past year.
ORP Representative Visit to Severn
In the winter of 2015, representatives from ORP visited our Teel campus to provide an assembly for our middle and upper school students. During the assembly, students heard about the role oysters play in the Bay and why they are vital to the Bay's health.
ORP also addressed the work they are doing to restore the oyster population in the Chesapeake Bay as well as the things students can be doing to help.

Subject: Severn School Visit
Paul,
I apologize that the time and weather have gotten away from us over the past week and we were unable to coordinate a pre-visit. That being said, I sincerely hope we are still on your schedule to have you (Brian) present to our Middle and Upper School students tomorrow, February 18th.
As discussed previously, you are scheduled to present to the Middle School from 9:30 – 10:00 in the Price Auditorium and the Upper School in the same auditorium from 10:20 – 10:50. Let me suggest we meet in my office in The Boone House, 116 Maple Avenue between 8:30 – 9:00 am. If you have a power point, you may want to arrive a little early so we can ensure everything works properly in the auditorium. Dave Coutts, our AV guru, will be running the booth for your presentations to both the Middle and Upper Schools.
Suggested talking points follow:
Middle School from 9:30 – 10:00
The audience will include 200+ students (and faculty) from grades 6 – 8. Please address the following issues
Upper School from 10:20 – 10:50.
Paul, please call me directly if you have any questions. I look forward to seeing you tomorrow.
Please confirm receipt of this email.

US Student Independent Projects
1. One US student spent time during his spring break working with ORP to collect oyster shells from local restaurant,
catalog them and deliver them to a shell recycling center on the Eastern Shore.
2. An US student testified before the MD State General Assembly in support of House Bill 815 for oyster shell recycling
income tax credit.
3. A team of US students have decided to work with ORP to help develop and build an oyster reef in Sullivan's Cove
(located in the Severn River behind our Teel campus). Beginning in the Spring of 2016, students will be working in
Severn's Innovation Lab to create a 3D model to represent a sonar depth analysis in an effort to show why this area
would support a successful oyster reef. Once the students have successfully mapped the bottom of Sullivan's Cove,
they plan to continue working with ORP to building a successful oyster reef.
7th Grade Field Trip
The class of 2020 will be visiting the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science Horn Point Oyster Hatchery in Cambridge, Maryland, for a day trip on Monday, April 20. The students will spend the day learning about oyster restoration while touring one of the largest oyster hatcheries on the East Coast. Students will also have the opportunity to get out on the water for a boat tour.

Suggested talking points follow:
Middle School from 9:30 – 10:00
The audience will include 200+ students (and faculty) from grades 6 – 8. Please address the following issues
- What is ORP? What do they do?
- Why is their work important? (i.e. Why are oysters so valuable to the Chesapeake Bay?)
- What successes have they had with oyster recovery?
- What can students/families do to help the oyster recovery process?
Upper School from 10:20 – 10:50.
- The audience will include 400+ students from grades 9-12 and 50 faculty members. The audience will have a range of knowledge regarding oysters and the environment. Some 9th and 10th graders may have taken an introduction to environmental science; some 11th & 12th graders will be in AP Environmental Science. 11th graders currently are taking biology. Some in the audience spend time on the water; some do not. All are ripe for further education about the current state of the bay oysters and the importance to the habitat.
Paul, please call me directly if you have any questions. I look forward to seeing you tomorrow.
